Kelly's Leadership for Working Families
For 25 years Kelly has championed workers' rights. Her mother, an elementary school teacher, belonged to her union and raised Kelly to value collective action. Although many
politicians show up to support labor when the cameras start rolling, Kelly has been in the
trenches, organizing arm-in-arm with labor:
- Created the Roll Back Wal-Mart Campaign
- Raised $25,000 for the Santa Monica Living Wage Campaign, Prop JJ
- Worked with SEIU, Local 99 (school bus drivers) in the Dump Diesel Campaign to phase out dirty diesel
school buses
- Volunteered her public relations efforts to support the California Professional Firefighters' fund
drive for firefighters who died in the September 11th attacks
- Built a broad, effective coalition for the Fairness for Injured Workers Act, Sen. Burton's bill that
raised injured workers' benefits
- Worked with the Teamsters to keep triple trailer trucks off California's Highways
- Created Put the Community Back in Our College Campaign to unseat Trustees who
voted to eliminate union positions at community colleges
- Led the state Building Trades and the California Professional Firefighters in
successfully fighting for legislation to encourage home builders to hire union labor
to make homes safer
- Fought to retain retired workers' pension
benefits as Proposition 211's spokesperson
- Recruited new members for the California Faculty Association and SEIU, Local 535
